Let's examine the factors shaping ALV's investment outlook.

ALV's Safety Content and Strong Launches Drive Growth

Autoliv is benefiting from increasing safety content per vehicle, supported by growing adoption of advanced safety technologies, including front-center airbags and pedestrian protection systems. Strong product launches are expected to create incremental content opportunities and strengthen its competitive position. Management anticipates record launch activity in 2026, followed by another record year in 2027. Autoliv's ability to consistently outperform global light vehicle production highlights its strong customer relationships, technological capabilities and increasing safety content per vehicle.

Autoliv's Cost Reductions and Operational Improvements

Autoliv continues to improve operational efficiency through footprint optimization, automation and productivity initiatives. In the third quarter of 2026, operational improvements contributed $34 million to adjusted operating income despite lower sales. The planned closure of manufacturing operations in Türkiye remains a key structural initiative, with production gradually transferring to more efficient European facilities. Management expects annual pretax savings of approximately $40 million, beginning in 2027 and reaching the full run rate in 2028. Supplier negotiations, value engineering and labor productivity improvements also help offset inflation.

ALV's Chinese OEM and India Growth Expansion

Autoliv's expanding business with Chinese automakers and India's growing automotive safety market remain important growth drivers. In the third quarter of 2026, organic sales to Chinese OEMs rose approximately 21%, outpacing vehicle production. Chinese OEMs accounted for 58% of Autoliv's China sales compared with 46% a year earlier. India delivered 29% organic sales growth, supported by increasing safety content per vehicle. Partnerships with Great Wall Motor and XPENG, alongside the opening of a second Chinese research and development center, strengthen Autoliv's customer relationships.

However, sustaining growth and profitability may prove challenging as Autoliv continues to face softer vehicle production, cost pressures and operational uncertainties.

ALV's Vehicle Production and Cost Pressures Limit Growth

Autoliv faces softer global vehicle production, with 2026 output expected to decline 2% and fourth-quarter production projected to fall 4.5%, including a 9% decline in China. Third-quarter organic sales fell 1.1%, while deteriorating customer call-off accuracy, particularly in China, complicated production planning. Rising raw material costs further pressure profitability, with 2026 inflation now estimated at $120 million versus $110 million previously. Raw materials reduced third-quarter adjusted operating income by $42 million, while tariffs lowered adjusted operating margin by 35 basis points despite recovery of more than 80% of tariff costs. Continued cost pressures could limit margin recovery in 2027.

ALV Faces China Weakness and Restructuring Risks

Autoliv's third-quarter organic sales in China declined 5.8%, as a 29% fall in sales to global OEMs, including Volkswagen, Honda and BMW, offset 21% growth from domestic Chinese automakers. EMEA organic sales fell 2.9% despite a 0.8% increase in regional vehicle production, highlighting persistent customer and regional challenges. Meanwhile, Autoliv's planned Türkiye manufacturing exit affects approximately 2,200 employees and involves $142 million in restructuring charges and $129 million in anticipated cash outflows. Although the move is expected to generate $40 million in annual pretax savings by 2028, production transfers and labor-related challenges could delay benefits and disrupt customer deliveries.

Autoliv's rising safety content, strong launches, growth in China and India, and cost savings support its long-term prospects. However, softer production, rising costs, global OEM weakness and restructuring risks temper its outlook, warranting a cautious, wait-and-watch approach.
